Amla....

Actually, i was just having an amla today and it made me think as to what is this little strange fruit all about. So, i did a bit of research work and compiled a few facts. Here are they:-
  • Amla a.k.a. Indian Gooseberry a.k.a. Emblica Officinalis has various common names like amalaka, nelli, aonla, aola, amalaki, dharty, aamvala, aawallaa, emblic, emblic myrobalan, nellikai, nillika and usareekai.
  • It is by far the richest natural source of anti-oxidants like vitamin C, emblicanin (A & B), punigluconin, pedunculagin, super oxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX).
  • Amla contains 160 times the amount Vitamin C as contained in an apple, 25 times as in an Orange and 35 times as in lime juice.
  • The fruit is cooling, refrigerant, diuretic, laxative, antibacterial and rejuvenative.
  • It is used in Ayurveda as a cardiotonic, antipyretic, antidiabetic, respiratory, cerebral and gastrointestinal tonic.
  • It is found to raise the total protein level and increase the body weight due to positive nitrogen balance.

Well, this was a surprisingly informative post for my blog. One more thing, if you try to eat an amla, have a sip of water after each bite...The water seems to be very cool and sweet...Try it....hehehe
